Jangro me!

everything else.

Serious flooding this morning. On the bright side...

On the bright side winter is melting away.  My golf clubs are calling me.

Daylight Savings

Last night was daylight savings.  While we learn our whole lives that "fall back" is so much better than "spring ahead", it actually reverses when you have little kids.

While the childless are lamenting the loss of an hour of sleep, us parents who have babies and young kids who wake up at ungodly hours see this as an opportunity to "reset" them.  My 1yo routinely gets up at 5am these days. Instantly we get a reprieve to 6am and hope this new wakeup time sticks.

This is why I always use custom domains

So tonight I changed the name of this posterous blog.  If you're reading this, then you probably read that too.

I always cringe when I see people using a service's domain name when they don't have to, like thisname.wordpres.com, thatname.blogger.com, or http://leoville.posterous.com, etc.

These people have no control over their traffic. While it is doubtful that those services could go under, it could happen.  At the very least, someday they might want to change their domain names, like I did.  In either case all the SEO, subscribers, traffic, etc. would disappear.

I changed domains from snaps.jangro.com to jangro.me.  Instead of losing all the links and search engine rankings on those old urls, I simply hosted snaps.jangro.com somewhere else and redirect all the old URLs to the new equivalent URLs with a really simple .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} snaps [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://jangro.me/$1 [L,R=301]

Try it.  See? http://snaps.jangro.com/skiing-at-mt-wachusett-today

Now all the old posts get redirected to the new domain.  Google's happy.  People who have linked are happy.  I'm happy.

All of these services allow you to use your own domain to point to their services.  It is easy. So why do anything else?

snaps.jangro.com -> Jangro.me

I set up this posterous blog as a subdomain of jangro.com as an experiment to see how traffic/SEO would react to a subdomain of my well established jangro.com domain.  I struggled with what to call it and settled on "Snaps.jangro.com" as in snapshots.

While this blog has grown to become my favorite place to post personal stuff, I've grown to dislike the name.

It's time for a change.

The good part about having a unique last name is that I've pretty much been able to grab every TLD for it.  (with the exception of jangro.net, which I still regret not grabbing 10 years ago).  So now I'm pointing jangro.me to this blog.

"Jangro Me!" is a nod to all the folks who have loved to turn my last name into a verb over the years.  Sometimes it gets suffuxes added to it as well, like Jangrosize and jangy.

More changes

At the same time, I've also ditched the SweetCron lifestream blog that I had hosted on scottjangro.com. While I love the concept, the software is too tempermental and was posting too many error pages.  The good news is that some folks have recently picked up the abandoned open source code and will be turning it into something more solid, maybe even a hosted solution.  In the meantime, I'm moving on.

Just in time, thanks to Sam Harrelson, I've learned of flavors.me and have put ScottJangro.com up as a flavors.me lifestream blog.

What Sam does, so must I.

I dropped $20 to get my own custom domain.  Sam did too.  Check it out, it's a great solution.

Awesome looking abandoned home #phontography

This house is near my own house. We were on the way to skating practice at 7am when I saw the amazing morning sunlight hitting this. I turned around to take a picture. My kids think I'm nuts.

I processed this with the very cool TiltShift Generator app. Still my favorite iPhone app.
